Neglect Matters Campaign – Lunch & Learn Sessions 2021

Our Neglect Matters campaign launched on 7th June with 5 “Lunch and Learn” sessions. These sessions were attended by over 1400 professionals and practitioners from across the Partnership and were recorded so sessions can be revisited or listened to for the first time if you were unable to join the events live. Below is a brief overview of what each session covered and the slides for each day. Live recordings are also available.

Monday 7th June – Dental/Oral Neglect

Key speaker – Adèle Johnson, Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry & Safeguarding Children Lead, RNTNE & EDH, UCLH

The presentation included:

  • Background given & role of paediatric dentists
  • Highlighted why teeth matter & common problems
  • Relevance of safeguarding to dentistry
  • Dental neglect as part of overall neglect & abuse
  • Collaboration conquers
  • Promote & integrate child oral health into all our professional practices – ASK?

Tuesday 8th June – Affluent Neglect

Key speakers: Ellie Buckey, an Independent School DSL and GCP2 Champion sharing her experiences and Sharon Davidson, Principal Child & Family Social Worker & Service Manager for Surrey Children’s Services Academy

Presentation included:

  • Research findings into affluent neglect
  • Link between neglect poverty and affluence
  • The problems with identifying neglect

Wednesday 9th June – Impact of COVID and LCSPRs

Thursday 10th June – Domestic Abuse

Friday 11th June – Adolescent Neglect

  • Surrey vision and guiding principles for all adolescents in Surrey
  • Mythbusting – how to engage issue of neglect and adolescent vulnerability
