We all have mental health. It affects how we think, feel, and behave, and determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Our mental health can change over time. In the same way that sometimes we get physically sick with a cold, sometimes we can get mentally ill too.

There are many types of mental health issues. You can find out more about each of these and how to cope with your feelings at Young Minds.

You should never be afraid to talk about how you’re feeling with someone you trust. Below are some places you can go if you need a help in hand.

The Surrey Safeguarding Partners have also put together a Suicide Prevention Toolbox which has lots of useful information on local services and things that you can do if you feel like you are in crisis.

  • Childline is a counselling service for children and young people up to their 19th birthday. Childline is there to help with any issue that you’re going through. You can talk about anything.
  • Heads Together is a campaign to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health. Heads Together wants to help people feel much more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and have the practical tools to support their friends and family.
  • Young Minds wants to see a world where no young person feels along with their mental health, and all young people get the mental health support they need, when they need it, no matter what.
  • Frank provides facts, support and advice on drugs and alcohol.
  • Rethink Mental Illness improves the lives of people severely affected by mental illness through their network of local groups and services

  • Reading Well recommends books about mental health, providing 13 to 18 year olds with advice and information about issues like anxiety, stress and OCD, and difficult experiences like bullying and exams.
  • The Mix are here to help you take on any challenge you’re facing – from mental heath to money, from homelessness to finding a job, from break-ups to drugs.
  • Papyrus HOPELineUK is a confidential support and advice service for young people under the age of 35, who may be having thoughts of suicide.

  • Head Meds provides general information about mental health medication.
  • Child Bereavement UK are here to help you rebuild your life when you’re grieving.
  • Samaritans is a registered charity aimed at providing emotional support to anyone in emotional stress or struggling to cope.
  • Time to Change is a mental health campaign with the objective of reducing mental health-related stigma and discrimination.
  • Kidscape offers support and information for young people experiencing bullying.
  • Changing Faces is a British charity supporting and representing children and young people who have a visible difference to the face, hands, or body.
